Do you have to study at Oxford or Cambridge to take part in Boat Race 2025?

THE yearly Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge has become a British institution.

First held in 1829, it has been an annual event since way back in 1856 and attracts 250,000 people to watch from the banks of the Thames each year.

Do you have to study at Oxford or Cambridge to participate in the Boat Race?

Each team consists of eight rowers and a cox who will race over a 4.2-mile stretch of the Thames.

As of 2024, Cambridge have won the race 87 times and Oxford 81 times, with one dead heat.

And the rules dictate that every competitor must be a student at their respective University – with neither offering sport scholarships without the student being up to the necessary academic standards.
