There are ways you can save cash in Aldi with a little know-how

Aldi is the cheapest supermarket in the UK, according to analysis of basket prices by consumer group Which?.

The discounter was found to be the cheapest in all 12 months of last year for a typical shopping list of 56 groceries.

Despite already offering top value for money, you can save more cash with a few steps. Here’s how…

DISCOUNT CLOSE TO EXPIRY

The supermarket often offers discounts on food with an expiry date of one day or less.

This includes items which haven’t yet been marked down.

The discounts on offers vary but the biggest savings of up to 75% can be seen on items with expiry dates of the same day or the following day you could get a discount of 30%.

The exact discount can depend on the item and you can expect to see prices automatically reduced at the till.

This is perfect if you’ve made a meal plan for the week and know exactly when you are going to eat the food you are buying.

For example, if you know you will be able to eat an item before it’s expiry then you will save case

SPECIALBUYS

Some of Aldi’s best value items are Specialbuy items that are much more affordable than a comparable item bought elsewhere.

The most popular items sell out very quickly so you need to know what is coming in.

Sign up to the supermarket’s mailing list where they often send out information on upcoming specialbuys.

Or you can keep an eye on Aldi’s website where they list all the special buys coming in each week.

Specialbuys are tend to come out twice a week on Wednesday and Sundays.

If there is something that you are keen to get hold of, it’s definitely worth heading in as early as possible on those days to avoid disappointment. With most Specialbuys when it is gone, it’s gone.

SUPER SIX FRUIT AND VEG

Every two weeks, Aldi selects half a dozen seasonal items and slashes the price as part of its “super six” deal.

For example, you can currently get a red cabbage down from 75p to 49p, as well as a five-pack or oranges down from £1.39 to 99p.

If you are trying to include a bigger variety of fruit and vegetables in your diet, the super six is a great way to do this and get savings on your weekly shop.

GET THE APP

Download the Aldi app and you can see the latest weekly offers, as well as Specialbuys that will save you cash.

You can make a shopping list of items through the app too which will help you stick to a budget and find the best value items for recipes and other needs.

REDUCED AISLE

Aldi’s prices are usually pretty good anyway, but when they are trying to clear stock they’ll offer even bigger reductions with special red tags.

Often Aldi sells off Specialbuys at reduced prices to make way for fresh stock so you can score a great deal.

It’s worth asking staff in-store where discounted items are shelved so you can have a good root through what is available.

TOO GOOD TO GO

You can get some brilliant savings on Aldi produce through the Too Good To Go app.

The app aims to cut down on food waste by helping to distribute food from restaurants and supermarkets that is about to go out of date.

In its partnership with Aldi you can get bag of produce worth at least £10 for £3.30.

Often you could find the value of food is well above £10 netting you an even bigger saving.

The drawback is that you don’t know exactly what you are going to get and if you will be able to eat it before it goes out of date.

However, it’s great for people who have broader tastes and are creative with food that needs using up.

It can also be good if you have plenty of freezer space as often items can be popped away and frozen until you are able to use them.

To access this you will need to download the free Too Good To Go app and then select Aldi from your local store list. You can reserve bags from 8pm for collection from 9.25pm through to the next day.

These bags are often very popular so you will usually need to snap one up quickly as close to 8pm as you can.

CASHBACK

You can get 20% back on your spending at Aldi through card and savings app Hyperjar.

That means for every £10 you spend you’ll get £2 back. On a shop of £100 that works out as £20.

You’ll need to first download and sign up for free to the Hyperjar app, then add money to your account. When you have finished shopping you can buy a giftcard for the exact amount which you can then use at the till, you’ll then get cashback into your Hyperjar account.

You can then spend the money as you like.
