Reports on social media suggest the youngster was non-verbal and had been found wearing only nappies while holding onto a toy.

Police are understood to have initially taken the child into their care while enquiries took place to establish what had happened.

In a subsequent statement, cops later confirmed the child had been returned to his parents and nothing criminal had taken place.

A spokesman for Gwent Police: “We received a report of a young boy being found by a member of the public in Newport at around 6.55am on Thursday.

“The child is currently safe with our officers while they speak with his parents to establish the circumstances.”
