ENJOY a slice of British Pie Week, starting tomorrow, by making your own delicious showstopper.

It’s the perfect time to practise making pastry and to experiment with low-cost fillings.

Here’s our top tips for making your own pies at home that are both cheap and easy

Get baking with these easy ideas.

PUT A LID ON IT: Pastry ingredients cost pennies. Get the satisfaction of making your own pie with 175g plain flour, a pinch of salt, 85g cold butter, cubed, and 3 tbsp of cold water.

Rub the flour, salt and butter together until it looks like breadcrumbs, add the water a spoonful at a time until the mixture starts to bond.

Gently knead until it just comes together and then rest in the fridge for 30 minutes before rolling out.

If you’re short on time, use shop-bought pastry — you can save some money by buying supermarkets’ own brands. Getting a block will be cheaper than ready-rolled.

FILL FOR LESS: The best pie fillings can come from tasty leftovers. Any meat from a Sunday roast can be put in the pie, along with excess gravy.

With chicken, add a tin of mushroom soup for a creamy alternative to the meaty sauce.

For a veggie treat, bulk out pies with sweet potatoes, butternut squash or cauliflower in a creamy sauce, with frozen sweetcorn or peas for extra goodness.

LOVE YOUR LEFTOVERS: Once you’ve cut out your pie lid, you’re likely to have leftover scraps of pastry. Don’t throw them away. For a savoury snack, cut into strips and sprinkle with Cheddar to make cheese straws.

For something sweet, bake the scraps, then cover them in icing sugar or dip them in melted chocolate.

PRIZE PIES: Look out for British Pie Week offers at supermarkets, pubs and restaurants.

Book a table at a Pieminister restaurant for the chance to win prizes. After Pie Week, you can still use its app to get a pie, side and gravy for £10, from noon to 4pm, weekdays.

Five easy tips to keep on top of your admin so you don’t miss payments

LEAVING finances to chance will cost you a fortune.

Instead, keep on top of key dates so you don’t miss payments or pay over the odds.

Here’s our top tips to keep on top of your finances

Get a step ahead with these easy admin tips.

APRIL FOOLS: Don’t be caught out by rising bills next month.

Instead, plan for the hike in advance.

Energy, water, council tax and broadband are due to go up, along with car tax and the TV licence.

It could mean paying around £300-£400 extra a year — about £35 more a month.

DEAR DIARY: Whether you use a desktop diary, a family planner or the calendar app on your phone, make a note of key financial dates and set alarms to remind you.

Include everything from insurance renewals to car MOTs.

Keep a record of when bills have to be paid, so you avoid late charges.

The ISA deadline is approaching on April 5, so use the tax-free accounts to make the most of any savings.

AVOID AUTO-RENEW: If you leave a contract to auto-renew, you’re likely to lose out financially.

[bc_video account_id=”5067014667001″ application_id=”” aspect_ratio=”16:9″ autoplay=”” caption=”Standing charges continue to rise DESPITE gas and electricity costs falling – what it means for you and how to soften the blow” embed=”in-page” experience_id=”” height=”100%” language_detection=”” max_height=”360px” max_width=”640px” min_width=”0px” mute=”” padding_top=”56%” picture_in_picture=”” player_id=”default” playlist_id=”” playsinline=”” sizing=”responsive” video_id=”6349879919112″ video_ids=”” width=”640px”]

To have enough time to find a better deal, make a note in your diary for around a month before the renewal date.

The sweet spot for securing new deals is often around three weeks before the old one ends.

If you find a better price you can either switch or haggle with your existing provider.

GIFTS GAFF: By leaving buying presents until the last minute, we spend more on impulse buys and urgent postage.

Keep a list of birthdays and buy early when you see bargains.

ADMIN O’CLOCK: Set an evening each month to deal with bills and paperwork, so you never fall behind.

Make sure you’re getting the best savings rates and using all the perks that come with your accounts.

Cancel unused subscriptions and do a monthly check on your credit score too.
