The experienced gaffer was helped back to his feet by Mason Bennett

The former Salford and Blackburn boss looked to boot the ball back onto the field of play and felt the effects of the wet winter weather on the Pirelli Stadium surface.

Caught in a muddy patch by the technical area, Bowyer went head over heels as his standing foot slipped from underneath him.

The experienced manager was able to quickly jump back to his feet and shake off the embarrassing moment with the help of Mason Bennett.

But it didn’t stop football fans from teasing the manager online.

One wrote: “Schoolboy error! Appropriate footwear for conditions on Match days always”.

While another added: “Highlight of today, I guess”.

A third joked: “Man kicked the ball and himself out of the game at the same time. Levels.”

And a fourth joshed: “And still made more successful passes than most of our midfield”.

Even the Sky Sports commentator couldn’t help but crack a little joke, teasing Bowyer for his playing days.

He said: “Poor Gary Bowyer, who didn’t play football professionally for very long before injury curtailed his career, has tried a brief return and ended up on his backside”.

Bowyer was appointed last month with Burton nine points from safety and in 23rd spot.

Since taking over they have fallen to 24th and are now 11 points from avoiding the drop zone.
