France 35 Scotland 16: Six Nations heartbreak for England as Scots fail to stop rampant hosts on march to title

FRANCE snuffed out England’s hopes of a Six Nations title triumph.

But they were made to battle by Scotland before clinching the championship crown.

Steve Borthwick’s men thumped Wales 68-14 in Cardiff earlier on Super Saturday to leapfrog back above Ireland who beat Italy.

But the Red Rose were praying for a Scottish victory in the French capital that would have led to them topping the table.

But Gregor Townsend’s side paid the price for failing to convert their exciting attacking into tries – while France’s four-try display took their tally to a championship-best 30.

Scotland’s hopes of success in the Stade De France were hit by a double blow either side of the break.

Townsend’s men thought they had reached the interval ahead when centre Tom Jordan burst through the France defence to score.

But the try was ruled out when the TMO spotted that Blair Kinghorn’s elbow was in touch during the build-up and France reached half-time 16-13 ahead.

If that was a setback, Scotland appeared determined to show they were determined to quickly put it behind them as they made a confident start to the second half.

But they were undone in the 43rd minute when a Finn Russell offload went to ground and Louis Bielle-Biarrey scored under the posts for a record-breaking eighth try in the tournament.

France had taken an early lead through a Thomas Ramos penalty and they extended their advantage when Yoram Moefan went over shortly after Scotland’s Jamie Ritchie was shown a yellow card.

But the home side were handed a major let off when hooker Peato Mauvaka escaped with only a yellow after headbutting Ben White.

A converted Darcy Graham try brought Scotland back into it and a Russell penalty levelled the scores at 13-13 after France prop Jean-Baptiste Gros was sin-binned.

But Scotland were unable to close the gap again and after Bielle-Barrey’s effort a converted Ramos try and second Moefan try took the game away from Townsend’s men. 

And that was enough for the Six Nations title celebrations to begin in Paris.
