THIS is the moment a former Prime Minister was spotted ‘hiding under a tree’ at Lingfield races.

The ex-premier was caught by Sky Sports Racing cameras at the Surrey track on New Year’s Eve.

Three people standing on a lawn under a tree.
Who’s that taking cover under a tree for the all-weather action at Lingfield on New Year’s Eve?

Some politicians are big fans of racing, with current leader Sir Keir Starmer going to Doncaster for last year’s St Leger meeting.

While Rishi Sunak was a fan of his local Catterick racecourse and former Home Secretary Priti Patel visited Goodwood.

Liz Truss was famously ‘absolutely rinsed’ by a commentator in ‘one of the best clips ever aired on British TV‘.

But it was another Conservative who showed their love for the sport on a cold, blustery afternoon of, it’s fair to say, fairly low level action.

Theresa May, 68, was the ex-Tory leader seen taking cover under a tree.

She appeared to be, in the words of At The Races, ‘hiding under a tree’ alongside husband Philip before the 2.14pm race, won by 7-2 Batal Dubai.

It didn’t look like May, who was PM from 2016-2019, had a runner in the contest.

But she might have some more time to go to the races after standing down from the House of Commons at last year’s general election.

May is thought to have previously had shares in a horse called Dome Patrol, who raced and won at Lingfield for trainer William Muir in the mid Nineties.

Maybe she, and the Tories, will have a bit more luck at the track than in the polls.
