DORITOS is making a huge change to its iconic crisps while also launching two new flavours.

The brand is known for its iconic triangle shape – but that is set to change.

Fans of the tortilla chips were left baffled after Doritos teased a picture of a square version of the snack.

With a caption “the shape of things to come”, they couldn’t believe that such a drastic change could be afoot, even branding it an “abomination”.

One questioned if Doritos was serious and said: “This ain’t April 1st, come on…”

Now all has been revealed and snack lovers could see a square Dorito, if they’re lucky.

The brand has put a limited number of the square shaped chips among the usual triangles.

The move is in connection with the release of the Minecraft Movie.

Those who manage to find a square Dorito in one of 100 packs of Chilli Heatwave flavour snacks (180g), will win a cash prize of up to £10,000.

They will hit stores between February 28 and March 10 and there will also be clues as too their location.

A digital version of the hunt will see QR codes on packs between February 17 and April 13 reveal prizes when scanned.

As well as cash there’s free cinema tickets and merch to be won.

Meanwhile two new flavours will be hitting shelves next week – The Creeper Vinegar and The Ghast BBQ.

Inspired by characters in the film, they have a zesty flavour, and sweet and tangy taste respectively.

Doritos UK senior marketing manager, Alex Nicholas said: “I can confirm that Doritos will be going square to mark its partnership with the highly anticipated A Minecraft Movie, only in cinemas April 4.

“We’ve always been famous for being triangular – until recently, square Doritos were unheard of! But it’s happening and finding one will unlock exciting prizes.

“We know our triangle-shape is iconic, so changing it had to be for something special. Our partnership with A Minecraft Movie gives people the chance to hunt for square Doritos and win prizes and try two exciting new flavours within the Doritos range, which we’re sure fans will love.

“It’s an iconic partnership that is taking snacking to another dimension, thinking outside the box… or should we say, outside the triangle?”

The change follows similar clues from Oreo that the shape of its biscuits are becoming square.

The biscuit giant confirmed the shock news after weeks of online whispers, with its UK and Ireland Instagram account dropping cryptic hints about the dramatic “shape-shift.”

While snack lovers might be itching to take a bite, Oreo hasn’t yet revealed where shoppers can get their hands on them.

A spokesperson for Oreo teased: “We love playfulness here at Oreo, so why not play with our iconic shape?

“We look forward to our fans seeing Oreo from a new angle.”

They added: “We can’t reveal more just yet, but plans are taking shape. Snacking fans should keep their eyes peeled for more—and we’ll be sure to circle back on the mystery soon.”

Doritos crisps have had a triangular shaped since they were launched in the US in the early 1960s.

By 1993 Doritos were the top snack food in America and they were launched in the UK the following year.

The crisps come in flavours including chili heatwave, cool original and tangy cheese.

Their triangular shape is perfect for dipping and the brand also sells a series of accompaniments including sour cream and chive, hot salsa and nacho cheese.

Doritos has brought in a number of limited-edition adaptations to its classic product over the years including 3D Doritos and Roulette bags, which hid extra spicy crisps in the midst of classic flavours.

In August Doritos also launched a limited-edition Flame Grilled Whopper flavour crisp in collaboration with Burger King.

But this is not the first time fans have been left astounded with an appearance on the BBC’s Inside the Factory revealing other secrets.
