The long-running plot will highlight Debbie as she is diagnosed with dementia.

Meanwhile, scenes yet to air reveal the character not remembering certain details.

She calls in at Street Cars, asking Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) where her cab is.

But when Eileen can’t find the booking, Debbie is left feeling furious.

Later, she takes a call from the hotel, where it is revealed there is a problem with the electrics.

Debbie enlists newcomer Mick Michaelis’ (Joe Layton) help to sort out the issue.

Mick explains it was a planned outage and that she’d been sent an email from her energy company.

Adamant she never received the email, Debbie refuses to pay Mick.

Sue Devaney first appeared as Debbie in 1984, but only stayed on the cobbles for a year.

She reprised the role beginning in 2019 and has remained in the show ever since.

It appeared news of her exit left the actress blindsided, with a source telling The Sun: “Sue was very shocked when she discovered she was being killed off.

“She was initially very sad and then furious and then upset again.  It’s taken her a long time to come to terms with it.

“She had no intention to leave the show and couldn’t believe it when they called her in and broke the news.”

An insider added: “Sue is a total professional and is already putting her all into what she sees as hugely important long running storyline.

“She saw the positive impact of the MND storyline and hopes that her dementia story can have the same effect and raise awareness of the condition.”

Regarding Debbie’s eventual exit, a source told Metro: “It’s one of the show’s biggest storylines of the year, and a real chance for Sue to finally get her time in the spotlight – it will just be devastating for fans that it will effectively be her final storyline.”

They added that bosses are planning for her exit to go down in the history books with some of the most emotional scenes ever set to grace the soap.

The insider added: “It’s one of many major storylines new boss Kate Brooks has in the bag, and there will not be a dry eye in the house.

“There is no doubt in the Corrie family that she will give the performance of a lifetime and make Debbie’s exit one to remember for years.”
