A CLEANING expert has revealed that you don’t need anywhere near as much fabric conditioner as you might be using.
Ann Russell explained that not being aware of how much you should use could be the reason your clothes still smell after washing them.

Sharing a video on her TikTok page @annrussell03, she revealed that there are three levels when it comes to adding fabric conditioner.
Ann explained that, over time, fabric conditioner has become more concentrated, which is why if you use too much, “after a while, your clothes will not smell very good.”
She explained that they will “feel greasy and floppy because it acts like a scented wax.”
Ann clarified this by saying that it effectively puts a wax over all the fibres in your clothes “and it stops them sticking together,” explaining that it is like a moisturiser for clothes, and over time, it builds up.
Speaking to her 2.8 million TikTok followers, she said: “That can be why you open your drawers and your clothes don’t smell great; they feel floppy and odd.”
Ann explained that those who use fabric softener should only use the first level in their conditioner drawer; otherwise, it will build up and not smell great.
Her video has gained 1 million views, with over 720 people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts.
One wrote: “The wax effect is the exact same reason why you shouldn’t use fabric softener with towels and tea towels.”
“Can’t absorb water if it’s sealed with a protective layer, similar to sports clothes.”
A second added: “I water mine down by 50 per cent because I can’t control myself when I pour it in!”

A fourth asked: “How do I get rid of the built-up stuff on clothes making it smell?”
To which Ann replied: “Just wash with very minimal detergent and nothing else.”
