Scots dad dies in Rome days after guest house explosion as tributes paid to ‘true gentleman’

A SCOTTISH dad has died days after he was injured in a horror gas explosion in Rome.

Grant Paterson, from East Kilbride, tragically lost his life in the blast which destroyed a B&B in the Italian capital on March 22.

The 54-year-old ferry worker was seriously injured in the explosion, and was reportedly unconscious when firefighters pulled him from the rubble.

He was understood to have suffered third-degree burns over 75 per cent of his body and was being treated in the Sant’Eugenio Hospital’s burns unit.

Tragically, Grant died from his injuries just over a week after the blast.

His employer CalMac led tributes to him after the tragic news, describing him as a “true gentleman.”

Diane Burke, CalMac’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Everyone at CalMac is distraught that Grant has passed away.

“He was a true gentleman and a credit to MV Clansman, the vessel he served aboard.

“During a distinguished 12-year career with us, he embodied the very best of CalMac and, with his larger-than-life character, he was much-loved by colleagues and passengers alike.

“Our thoughts are with Grant’s friends and family at this extremely difficult time.”

Other tributes have been paid to the dad and ferry worker after his passing.

One pal said: “Devastated at the news today that Grant Paterson has lost his battle for survival. RIP and fair winds.

Another heartwarming message read: “So sad to hear this Grant was a lovely man, a true gentleman.

“I will miss our chats whilst I’m travelling.

“Our deepest condolences,thoughts are with his daughter, family and, friends and work colleagued.

“Rest in Peace Grant , you will be truly missed.”

A fundraiser set up to support Grant’s family was started by friends after he was injured.

It has since raised over £11,600.

The Foreign Office has been approached for comment.
