The Ugly Stepsister is co-written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt in her directorial debut.

It is an International co-production from Norway, Poland, Sweden and Denmark.

After Sundance, the film was showcased at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.

Speaking to Variety, writer-director Emilie revealed her thought process for the movie.

She said: “This beauty horror twist on Cinderella is inspired by the Brothers Grimm version and by my own struggles with body image.”

Continuing, she noted her “goal is to provoke both empathy and discomfort.”

In addition, to “inspire my audience to reflect upon their perceptions of, and relationship to, beauty.”

The film was released to Norwegian cinemas on March 7.
