THEY’D never bought a carpet before, and had no idea what they needed.

So when Maddy and her other half hit the shops in search of the perfect carpet for their new home, they ended up being persuaded to buy one of the most expensive in the store.

It was a grey deep pile carpet – for which they paid £2,000 to have in three bedrooms, on the stairs and on the landing around five years ago – and Maddy has called it their “biggest ‘home improvement’ regret”.

In a video on TikTok, she showed the carpet as it currently looks on the stairs.

While one side – the side “where no-one walks” – is still nice and “soft and fluffy”, the middle is “matted and so slippy”.

And that’s due to the fact that the middle part of the stair is the most walked on part of the step.

“We got these carpets in our early twenties, we’d never bought a carpet before, we didn’t know what we needed,” Maddy added in the TikTok caption.

“The salesman from SCS clearly wanted to get as much money from us as possible.

“He showed us the softest, fluffiest (most expensive) carpet, and said it would last us forever!”

Maddy added they were so “wrong to have listened to him”, adding that the carpet has actually got to the point that it’s so slippery, it’s “dangerous”.

“We will be changing the carpets when we can afford to, and will not be going for the softest, fluffiest one!” she insisted.

“You live and learn I guess!”

Maddy also revealed in the comments section that they “don’t allow shoes in” the house, so it wouldn’t be because it was being walked on with shoes that it had flattened.

“I’ve been in carpets for 30 years,” one person wrote in the comments.

“Dead simple – hard wearing carpets are hard, soft wearing carpets are soft!”

“The man in carpet right told us, if it feels nice on your hands… don’t buy it!” another added.

“This is my biggest regret too, and getting grey laminate in my living room,” a third sighed.

“Your carpeter should have told you this,” another added.

“I went other day and was thinking to buy this they advised dead against it, went with herringbone weave texture for the stairs – best decision.”

“Yeah it was definitely an idiot who sold it to us. We had no clue!” Maddy raged.

“I’m surprised they fitted that because they should have told you it’s a slipping hazard!” someone else wrote.

To which Maddy replied: “I know right! I’m constantly slipping on it!”

“Go for a hard wearing hessian style carpet, looks lovely and lasts forever,” another suggested.
