Fury as 10p Freddo bars now being sold for outrageous sum as chocolate falls victim to soaring inflation

It means a price rise of a whopping 900 per cent in 20 years.

A post on the social media network Reddit shows a photo of the popular 18g snacks costing £1 each in a WHSmith store in Carlisle.

Fans of the Freddo bar were quick to take offence at the huge hike.

One said: “£1 for a Freddo is disgusting.

“Daylight robbery at its finest!”

While another user hinted the discovery was bordering on apocalyptic.

They wrote: “I showed my wife this picture, and asked whether it was time to start burning things down.”

The Freddo bar, shaped like a frog, originated in Australia.

It was launched in Britain by Cadbury in 1973 but ­withdrawn in 1974.

It returned in 1994, costing 10p.

The price remained at 10p until 2005, since when it has roughly increased by 2p a year, up to 25p in 2016.

In 2017, the price increased to 30p.

In 2022 a Freddo priced at 49p was seen in a WHSmith in Liverpool.

The company was voted the worst high street retailer in a survey by Which? in 2018.

It is considering the sale of 500 stores to focus on travel hubs and hospitals.
