ALDI could be forced to stop selling a popular own-brand drink after cider maker Thatchers won a legal claim that the store’s Taurus drink “copycatted” the packaging of its Cloudy Lemon Cider.
Even so, the German supermarket giant, which plans to appeal, continues to sell other products that look similar to global brands but at a fraction of the cost, enabling shoppers to slash up to two thirds off their supermarket bills.

Consumer expert Sue Hayward said: “Aldi will be able to get away with having copycat products, providing there’s some difference between the items.
“It can be a grey area because we’ve seen cases where big brands have been unhappy about the copycat products.
“It’s super-clever marketing by Aldi, because we often get lured into thinking it’s the same thing.
“It’s cheaper and often tastes almost the same.”
An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are disappointed that the Court of Appeal disagreed with the High Court in this case. We think the Court of Appeal’s decision is wrong and we intend to appeal.
“Aldi offers exclusive brands as low-price alternatives to more expensive branded products.
“The High Court was clear that Aldi customers know what they are buying when they shop with us.”
We highlight some of the savings to be had.
